Pallet Shelves & Boys' Reading Nook

before
The boys have a little nook in their bedroom that I want to use as a reading area.  We bought a Pottery Barn chair for the boys at a yard sale for $5, which is already in the nook.  I also added some signs that I found from the same yard sale.

Currently, I have a basket for their books, but I found some pallet shelves on pinterest that I thought would work perfectly in here. Right on time, my neighbor had sod delivered on two pallets that he didn't mind giving to me!
I was able to find great directions on making these into shelves from Ana White Homemaker. I enlisted the help of my dad, my own personal handyman, to complete this project.  We made a few changes from the directions:
  • We had to replace some of the boards with others that were cracked. Dad carefully pried the boards up so that they didn't split from the nails.
  • We cut our shelves in half next to the brace.
  • For the bottom, we used one of the pallet slats previously cut in half instead of scrap wood.
I sanded the rough stuff down and cleaned them up. Time to transform the nook!

What's even better is that it got me to hang up the curtain I've had for almost a year! I was able to repurpose some light strand covers to put on the ends of the valence. I have a set of baseballs on here, footballs, soccer balls, and basketballs on their other window treatments.

    1. They do love them, and the best part is that their books are actually staying off of the floor! I can't say the same for their toys :) ~Erin

  13. I did just one pallet book shelf a few months ago too (http://takingtimetocreate.blogspot.com/2012/03/pallet-book-shelf-book-rack.html). I love them! Such a great use for a pallet.

I really like how you left the wood raw. It adds so much texture!

    1. I thought about painting the shelves, but I liked how they looked already. Plus it was another step! If it was newer wood, I probably would have painted them. Thanks for stopping by!
