Valentine's Day Is Around the Corner

Valentine's Day
It's amazing how quickly Valentine's Day comes after the excitement of Christmas dies down! In our house, we concentrate on the love of our family and try not to get bogged down with the commercialization of the holiday.

We don't have many decorations around the house, but it's enough to make it festive. If you want to see some of the posts from years past for ideas, click on these pictures:

Last Minute Valentines and Decorations

It has been a fun day being cooped up in the house with all of my guys! We had a snow day, which is pretty much unheard of in Alabama. And the crazy thing is... They're calling for more tonight!

Since I was on lock down Saturday to get our taxes completed, I've been itching to do some crafting. We made the boys' valentines on Sunday, but that just wasn't enough. Today was the perfect opportunity to add some last minute decorations.

Ready for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is toned down a little this year, because we are still establishing our budget.  What I can remind myself of are the years to come when that budget is in full swing and we will have enough money to comfortably cover the extra fun things.

That doesn't mean that I can't do anything!  We already made the boys' valentines for their classes.  We also made their teachers' Valentines.  I used the same idea from last year, so visit here for the details.

Very Mice Valentines

The boys and I (and even Daddy!) have been working on their valentines.  I searched my favorite inspirational place, Pinterest, for cute ideas.  There are a ton of awesome valentines out there!  You can also see what Jackson made last year here.

I decided on cute little Hershey Kiss mice this year.  It only cost me $3 total for both boys' classes!  I already had all of the supplies needed except for the kisses.

Happy Valentine's Day!

What a great way to start the day!  We had French toast for breakfast with hearts punched into the bread on Valentine's plates.  Then we opened Valentine's day cards from the grandparents and got sweets from them (They are hidden away for later!)

One More Valentine!

I was able to get one more Valentine out of my boys after their nap time.  This one was for the grandparents.

Valentines

We've been very crafty this weekend!  I love when I am able to get my boys involved in making things.  We made Valentines for Jackson's class and his teachers.  All of the ideas I got from Pinterest and then figured out how to do it as cheaply as possible.

For Jackson's classmates, I wanted to find something that didn't involve food because of some of the allergies they have.  Having been a teacher with children who had the challenge of food restrictions, I wanted to have Jackson give something that everyone could enjoy.
To make:
1. Cut hearts from construction paper.  I did the old-fashioned fold in half then cut.  To make it easier and to make the hearts about the same size, I cut the construction paper to 6 x 4 1/2.
2. Punch holes on either side of the hearts.
3. Add saying.
4. I had Jackson sign the back, because he still needs a lot of room to write his name.  This helped keep him from being frustrated.  (He's a perfectionist like his mama!)
5. Feed the glow stick into the holes.  Be very careful not to crack them!

Jackson and I made these for his teachers.  I purchased the flower punches for this, and luckily they were 40% off.  I also know I will use them again.
To make:
1. I used pickle jars and took the labels off using goo gone.
2. Fill with conversation hearts to desired height.
3. Create flowers by punching different card stock paper.  Attach to bendy sticks (or straws, pixie sticks, pipe cleaners, or anything else you happen to have) with Elmer's glue.
4. Create leaves by using a circle punch or just cut them free hand.  Attach with Elmer's glue.
5. Arrange flowers in jar.
6. Use ribbon to attach heart around top of the jar.

More Valentine's Decorations

My next stop for Valentine's Day decorating was the dining room area.  Our house has a completely open floor plan, so I like to try to coordinate all of the decorations.  Check out the family room area.  I took the open hearts that I used on the mantel (these are 1" width) and attached curling ribbon in the middle when I glued them.  I then hung them and curling ribbon from our chandelier.

Valentine's Day Decorating

Valentine's Day is on it's way!  I love to decorate for the holidays.  It makes it so much more fun for my boys!

I have been getting a lot of inspiration from Pinterest and then find things I already have around the house to create what I see.  Here are some examples:
