Repurposed Bench

This project had me really proud of myself!  I bought a small bench for $5 at a yard sale the other weekend. It wasn't much to look at, but I was already picturing what it could become.
I have an armoire in our master bedroom that I use for scrapbooking, and I need a place to sit while working. This will work!
I just installed a headboard above our bed, so I used the same color paint from that project to redo the legs. I wanted fabric to color coordinate with our bedding, and I was picturing something either striped or plaid. The perfect fabric was waiting for me at Hobby Lobby.  I took a pillow sham and the paint chip with me to make sure it matched. I also asked the opinion of two other shoppers just to make sure!

The top of the bench was easy to detach, only needing to be unscrewed from the base. I sanded the base, applied primer and the colored paint, and moved on to the top.

I measured out the fabric, leaving about 2 inches around each side to wrap over the edges.

Then came the fun with my hubby's staple gun! This was the first time I had used it, and it was really easy. Since I was working with stripes, I made sure they were running straight across the top as I stapled the bottom. (I later realized that I probably should have centered the stripes as well.) I started with one short side, then moved to the opposite side, pulling the fabric tight as I attached the fabric to the bottom of the board.

I used hospital corners as I attached the long sides, continuously checking to make sure my stripes were staying straight and the fabric tight.

I reattached the newly painted base to the reupholstered top, and it was perfect!

  8. Also visiting from Debbie Do's Link Party!

Great job on your little bench. I recently redid a $6.99 bench as well in ASCP paint and a $2.50 piece of fabric from the resale shop. These little stools have such nice turned legs!
